Allegany County occurs as county located in the western part of the U.S. state of Maryland. When of 2000, the people is 74,930. Its county seat is Cumberland. A title Allegany comes from either the local Native American word, oolikhanna, which means "beautiful stream." It should be noted that a spelling Allegany County is used around New York as well as inside Maryland; Pennsylvania spells a similarly-known as county Allegheny County, while Virginia and North Carolina spell theirs Alleghany County.

History
